Hi all, I've already posted a few watercolours on here and thanks for your kind comments. Last night I attempted my very first Oil painting after all the help and advice I've received. I've only put the background and first layer on but really enjoyed it. I shall do some more tonight, once it's finished I shall display for your comments guys. here's the start.

Howdy Azza,

Tiz I.

Reckon it'll start coming alive when you put in some strong colours and start to define a little.

Paint on

Hi guys, below are my first oils nearly finished, I think I've finsihed the flower. The flash on the camera have given both the paintings a glow. Let me know what you think, I'm really enjoying using oils, and my wife has just bought me some palet knives so looking forward to experimenting.

You have been busy.Glad you are enjoying them, such a different experience than watercolour arn't they? With the flower painting just a suggestion, there seems so much green in the painting maybe the background could be softened to either in a contrasting shade or toned down, just an opinion.keep going :D

yes, I agree with wendy about the green, maybe its just the background green is just a bit of a dominant shade? sort of viridian mix which is always a bit of a bully with other colours :) I like to mix my own greens then you can make them sing together and not fight :) a good start though - its all about getting to know the paints when you first try a new meduim i think - not really about the artwork. I like your second one too, i love reflections in paintings. you could add more if you wanted by having a few lights in some of the windows? or not of course - your painting :D its easy to suggest things for others...

just a thought - as you're a watercolourist - and oil techniques are dif, more flexible..., you can make a thin glaze of something to wash over the background to change the colour, if you pick a "transparent" colour, so that it still is green but just knocked back a bit. put some of the green on a piece of card and experiment with dif colours over it if you want to do this then you find what will work without touching you painting - just in case you prefer it as it is!!

thanks for the tips guys, I think your right about the background, I shall calm it down a bit. I realised on another forum that I had a tidy up on photobucket and deleted my paintings off the forum (doh) so I've added them on again. I've got to straighten the horizon on the seascape for starters.

cheat's tip.
straight lines are a nightmare for me - i just don't seem able to do them.. so when i need one i use masking tape so a sea scene for instance I'd put masking tape where i want the sea to be and then paint the sky, once its done pull of the tape and there's a nice straight horizon!!

Morning Azza,

I like your flower painting best.

The green is a snip full on i guess, but it's not three bad.

Next time you paint a similar scene I'd choose a different colour for the background to the main subject perhaps.

But I wouldn't tinker with this too much now. Call it done and crack on with your next creation.

Paint on Az

Morning guys,

Chalky I think your dead right, the background is a bit ahhhhhh, but I'm gonna call it a day on this one (my wife's got it at work now, it will brighten up the office), and finish off the sea / building painting. Now I've had a play with oils I'm looking forward to getting into something bigger. Thanks for all the tips guys I shall post my next piece on here. :D
