Hello cheeky chappies,

I though I'd post my lastest canvas wrecker on this fine forum for you all to chuck tomatoes at in a virtual kinda way.

Followed a bit later by -

Now easy goes it folks. It ain't finished, so don't be grabbin for the vegies yet. (or are they a fruit? I never am sure)

I just put in up here in the absence of a "works in progress" section.

Any comments (and I'll shoot ya) welcome.

Cheers

Hi Chalky

He has very scary eyes! I don't do animals so I don't have anything valuable to add on the lion but from a compositional point of view what are you going to do on the right hand side where the map is on the original?

Oh and they are a fruit by the way

cheers
Elise

Morning All,

Thanks for the comments.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the right side yet. Maybe a bit of a glazed fuzzy distant foliage. I'll see.

Keep you posted though.

Took a look at all your websites just now. What different styles everyone has. It's privilege to share the web with such tallented artists.

Your "loch staonaig" painting is great Elise.

As are all of your "sky sunsets" Wendy. "classical sunset" is a winner for me.

"looking for a soft place to fall" is my fave of yours Lisa.

Linda "out for a stroll" is great.

and I love your "gas station" Sheila.

Paint on arty buddies

Catch ya

Hi chalky
I like the menace in the lion's eyes. Maybe you could insert a distant herd of zebra/buffalo on the right to add to the context...

Most impressed so far.

David

Hi Chalky - I do a lot of reading on these forums but not a lot of replying - ain't got the time I' m afraid but your painting in progress has "moved" me to speak!

I think you should just allow your lion to develop naturally, you have already placed him well, using the rules of the "golden section" or the "rule of thirds"..............let your imagination and creativity do the rest? You have a way of giving your subjects great depth and character, I think it's the eyes you do so well.

Have a look at my friend's website Denise Buckley - she's gone pink! Hello Denise if your are reading........................

All the best Ashe [/url]

Afternoon all,

Next stage of my "Lion" pic below if you want a squizz.

Worked on the whole painting some more this afternoon. Darkened darks, Lightened a bit here and there. A bit more refining on the facial features. Eyes, nose e.t.c

Oh yeah, and I've changed the background colour some what. Still undecided on the final version hence the right side of the lion is a still roughed in.

Image

It's in oil on canvas paper 16'' by 13''. Incase your interested.

Keep smiling

Hi Sue! I'm here. Yes I did go pink. Lions are such tough, strong animals that I thought it would be a complete opposite. What am I like!!!

Chalky I love your site! I love painting animals and especially gorillas' so it was just up my street.

FAB!

  :) :o :D

Hi DB,

Great work! right back at ya. "Stalker" is my favorite. I'm a bit keen on big cats I think.

I've never used pastels. I'll have to give um a go one day.

Catch ya

Great work chalky. I love WIP's - the chance to see how the work is created - its the most interesting part seeing how we all have different styles and there's so much to be learned. I like the new background - i think it goes well with the colours in the lion. I think the way you've brighten the mane from the original adds more interest.
I'm not sure why but there seems to be a feeling of separation from the mane and face to me - but looking at your reference work its there too - maybe thats the way lions Do look and its my perception of how they look is wrong  curious thought. I suppose thats where " paint what you see and not what you Think you see" comes in so useful. :)
Look forward to seeing finished version and thanks for sharing it with us.

Howza all,

A bit more work on me Lion. Moving around the picture highlighting and refining, adding detail here and there.
Trying out the background you can see below. More work to be done yet to try and get a blurred distant look.
We'll see.

See ya
