Can somebody clarify please on whether the featured artists on the homepage are generated randomly or selected by the site webmaster..I ask this as I have noticed certain artists being repeatedly featured whilst others have not. Thanks for the clarification in advance.

I'd imagine they'd be taken from some kind of shortlist of the most professionally-produced, commercially-viable and best-presented art available on the site? The stuff most likely to present a high-quality image and attract browsers and potential clients. No?

Well having just viewed the featured artist this morning I think its randomly generated. As surprisingly there is no content at the moment.Guess that kind of answers part of my question.

Stuart, don't suppose you tried contacting admin via email regarding this question did you? If so, did you get an answer?

hi, I looked on her site and although the home page is spookily bare she does have work in the galleries, I can't imagine it is random, otherwise they might put up poor sites, then people might think the work is rubbish and not look at everyone else...I am sure the powers to be have it in hand, I wonder if there is a waiting list...how long does a featured artist have their work up for...so many questions, we know you're reading this artist web controller people, what are the answers? Hope you are all taking advantage of a spookily warm november, I did my daughters paper round in a t/shirt this morning.

I've never noticed me as a featured artist ever, but I'm almost always on page one of the home page and often at the top. I don't know why other than I update my site every couple of days with new work.

I think you should be a featured artist, I just looked at your site, fantastic, I grew up in galashiels, so you've got me all homesick for scotland!
I update my site a lot too and like you I am often one of the three images on the homepage, but I guessed they are only up for about 5 mins and then change so that everyone gets a chance?

No Helen I didnt ...thought I would have got a response here...I dont think anything has changed since my original post still seeing the same artists now as then.So might be worth somebody sending Chris an email to find out what criteria you need to have to be featured...

from my experience, when you log on your site automatically goes to the top of the artist list. as others log on, you move down.

i think the featured artists are selected randomly. by pure chance i found myself featured once by not doing anything!

Hi all,

I hope I can clarify a few points here:

Currently we manually choose the featured artists which appear on the home page, there's no specific criteria or process to speak of, it's simply at our discretion.

Also as Robert has noticed the artists page listed most recently updated sites first by default.

However as the site is growing, it's likely that we will change the mechanism behind both the featured artist and the artist/artwork listings. We're wondering as to the best way of choosing artists for these slots - should we allow people to pay for featured listings (like ebay/google adwords etc.), should there be some sort of public feedback system (ratings/comments/favourites) that influence the listings and of course The Artists Web can continue to moderate internally. I suspect a mixture of these would be the best approach.

Just continue to moderate internally. I don't want to be involved with voting for a "best" artwork, or have a situation where the wealthiest artists can buy their way into a prominent position.Carry on as you are. (But be fair!)
