Dear All, I am disappointed at the commission we will get from Easy Art for our prints. I realise that all the printing, p & p, money handling and etc will be done by them but just 12.5% seems miserly. It seems to be the same old story, the people who create original work (not just art) nearly all end up at the bottom of the heap. Easy Art sell from many ages and styles but we on this site are at least all still alive and working. Could we have a debate and some more views please. Peter French.

yes i'd be interested in what others think too.

got to admit, at first i thought it was a low commision too, but when you take into account that we don't actually have to do anything other that supply a digital file.....it's not so bad.

i feel it's just another outlet if you choose to take it.
we're all free to go to a printers and print off our own, sort out framing, postage, packaging.........initial costs can be extortionate, especially for good quality products.

my priority is quality. my concern would be that i couldn't see the quality of the print before it goes out and how much would it be selling for?

This question came up on a previous thread I recall.

Anyway firstly consider the fact that you as the artist are not involved in the effort or cost of manufacture, shipping, returns, marketing (although it's useful if you add to the marketing by steering people to your website) or any of the other overheads associated with running a business.

And don't forget that is 12.5% of the sale price (exluding VAT), not the profit, if the percentage was based purely on profit it would be much higher.

On top of this there's no risk,no exclusivity, no up front cost, no handling returns you merely have to upload suitable quality images and collect the commission each month.

I'm lead to believe industry standard for publishing deals comparable to, if not lower than 12.5%.

Hi Everyone, Thought I would offer another perspective on this one (no pun intended!!). If you had to get just one painting set up as prints, you would pay between

Just a few questions

Who controls the pricing? Do we have any say in this

Who controls the volume? Limited editions etc

Copyright? There is only us granting them permission to use the image, but to what extent

Quality Control? Concerned about not seeing the finished print before it goes out

I am sure it will work really well for some but not for others.

I am thinking about giving it a go with a painting that I have here at the moment, if I can get answers to the above, unfortunately it will not work with paintings that have sold already as you do need to re photograph.

Based on the level of sales through the Artists Web, I doubt if I would get any payment through (over 50 pounds). I know it is free to do, but with a renewal coming up next month, no sales, no enquiries etc, and being on the other side of the world, I am beginning to think that it might just not work for me.

Will give it some more thought.

I think 12.5 % is fair given that we don't have to do anything other than upload work ( that said I haven't done it yet - but I will, just busy at mo) The pricings are all set according to size from what i remember, I don't think there is any control over volume, its not really a place for those who want to do signed limited eds I guess, and I've not looked but I guess its only copyright to use via easyart. Its an important point though Rosie and one I want to check first before going ahead. Last thing we want is for a print to prove popular and find that we've signed away rights to useage....

The rights remain totally yours. You just give them the right to print it and sell them.

Hi Rosie,

I think most these points are covered in the print agreement, but I'll answer here.

Quote:

Easy art controls the pricing, and they have a standard pricing scheme that is the same for all artwork I believe i.e. it's down to the size and format not the actual image.

You are granting permission for your images to be reproduced for the purposes of sale in the print program and to be displayed as for sale on Easyart's and The Artists Web's respective network of website.
Apart from that there's no other transfer of copyright or exclusivity - you can use other print programs, print your own prints etc.

Quality Control? Concerned about not seeing the finished print before it goes out.

The samples prints we examined were of excellent quality and they have a dedicated customer service team to boot.

If you sales stayed below 50 pounds over a long period, we'd settle the balance on request, this is mainly to keep down our admin as sending out hundreds of micro payment each month is no small task.

I don't think there's anything to lose, apart from a small amount of time uploading your images.
