I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on the best lighting to use in a not-so-well lit venue. At Spruce Meadows, Alberta, Canada, I exhibited in a 10 x 10 booth last year, and will be doing so again this year. As last year was my very first exhibition, I had a steep learning curve...picked up these tiny little lights, but if anyone has any ideas, reasonable cost of course, that would be great.

Dichroic lamps are very commonly used for lighting artwork. Those look to hold 50 watt low voltage dichroics. Must admit, when I exhibit they come with the stands in most places and there's nothing wrong with them. Technically though they do not provide the best light to show off paintings. They are too bright and do not give the best color rendering as they are too close to the work and not uniform. Cool white fluorescents would be better and they would provide a glare free more uniform paler light. A good lesson in glare is to be learned from fast food restaurants. Many like McDonalds are deliberately very badly overlit to deter customers hanging around for too long. Psychological.
