hello
I have just started selling my work in galleries.
I have been approached through my web site by someone who saw my work in a gallery - Should I charge the same price as the gallery for this print or less?
Any comments would help
Thanks

Difficult - if you've a good relationship with a gallery you might find they don't like you undercutting them and that things go down hill if you do - just a point to consider. also - though you don't pay gallery comission you do have to pay web fees and use your time to promote the site(s) so they are costs that you have to factor in.

personally I think I'd charge the same - or direct them to the gallery and say all sales via them?

I think I would keep my prices lower for my online gallery as it is always a marketing bonus often used ( Buy direct from the artist and save whatever mark up?
So you are charging the same price for the work in a roundabout way.

Hi,

If the customer is happy to pay the gallery price then I would accept that, if they are expecting a discount then keep it as a private negotiation, as long as you keep your minimum price in mind and don't compromise that. I wouldn't reduce your price by very much though.
As noted previously you have web charges to pay etc and galleries normally expect you to maintain similar prices otherwise they won't get sales for you.

NB - Another view is, depending on your relationship with the gallery, that you may suggest that they buy the print through the gallery unless you have agreed that you will be selling from your own website as well.

I keep the prices pretty much in line, I don't like the idea that a customer might pay a gallery one price then see something broadly similar on my website for a lot less and feel they've overpaid. I don't think the buying public have any idea of how much commission galleries charge, I think if you asked Joe Public they'd guess 10%. so if I have any differential I keep it to no more than 10% and (like Rob) any further discount would be a matter for private negotiation.

cheers
elise

Thank you all for your very helpful responses.
I have offered her the same price as the gallery but included free delivery and a discount if she buys more than one.
Thanks again
Karen

thats an excellent compromise - i was forgetting delivery charges of course! and a disc for multiple buys is always a good idea.
