Hello everyone,

how is everyone getting on with their art. These past recent weeks have been a pretty rough ride for I. I finally ceased selling my art with eBay as my fee's were running into the four figure mark each month. As a result I have been concentrating on my new job so my painting has somewhat slowed down, but nevermind. Was so happy to get back into the studio last night with some rekindered inspiration. So here it is after almost a month absence from painting. Target practice all ya want lol.

Size: 20 inches high x 48 inches wide overall.
Mediums: Acrylic, gouache (burnt umber, buff titanium white, burnt sienna, titanium white, mars black.

A commercial winner :) I personally don't think Ebay is the right place for selling artwork maybe prints,I don't think you are going to find buyers that do not want something other than really cheap.
Now I am going to get slaughtered from people that do use ebay

I'm confused ! I thought ebay fees were purely on a percentage of sales basis. To have four figure fees each month makes me think the sales must have been through the roof and very much worth keeping going or am I missing something here ?

You pay for each item you list on there for sale.

lovely work. The figures give a sense of space and make the sky seem huge.
ebay: tried it a coupe of uears ago but I think unless you were in on the early days and have an established customer basre its really hard to get art sold there. I was getting just a few pounds for mine - i persevered a while thinking maybe it would get better once i had more feedback but gave up in the end. If you pay extra for premium listings ( from memeory something like £15 per item the the art gets listed ahead of others so you're at least likely to get seen ( who trawls therough 100's of listings?) but its a gamble cos if it doesn't sell your £15 plus other cots out of pocket. In addition ebay charge a final fee on top depending on what it sells for. I've seen artists who do make a living from ebay from artwork selling for £10 - 20 a time ( wtatercolours mostly) but they must have to paint like an assembly line to do enough to live. I think for me that would take the enjoyment out of it. I like to paint - thats my motivation - sales are a bonus and pay for new materails. If we had to rely on my painting income we'd starve! :D but then i suppose if it was my only income I'd have to take the marketing side more seriously. I hate that bit - takes away the painting time...

Hi Fab,

That's a great painting.

Not sure about the figures, but I like it all the same.

Well painted

Many thanks for all your kind comments. Back to the eBay fee thing. If you want to get maximum bids and maximum profit for your work you need to feature items on eBay which costs a tenner plus the regular listing fees. I was listing in the region of 8 - 10 large canvas paintings a week which would normally sell between 60 and 80 pounds each. Even with this kind of turnover by the time you've taken out your fees, costs of materials, postage and packaging costs, tax's etc you end up with less than an attractive salary each week. The only thing good eBay done for me is to get 1,500 of my paintings out to the world along with my name which in turn promoted my website. But having experienced it for a number of years I would seriously not recommend it.
