Following on from the thread about Emin's work and art supposidly the must have.
I have just got off the phone from a client, and her exact words were local galleries are abundant with landscapes and seascapes 9 maybe because that's what sells) but where she lives they are over priced, people are still buying Art that is pleasing to the eye,not what the Daily mail tells them they should be buying,so maybe all this hype surrounding art in the media is portrayed in the press as is everything else, just hype and hot air and not reality, something to think about.

I may be wrong but it seems to me that there are at least two types of 'art' buyer.
The one who buys the work of an artist who appears to be on a track to fame, hence as an investment. You don't have to like a painting or work to buy it for that reason, it can be kept locked away.
Then there are those who buy what looks good with their decor or reminds them of a place/ time/ person.
Cost would be a factor in the second group I'd imagine.

Yes you are right Lorna it probably will never be shown just kept in storage.
But who are these people that decide this.

I am sorry but which ever way you look at it a pile of Bin Bags or an unmade Bed is not a piece of great art.

I would rather people enjoy looking at my work after paying out hard earned money, call me a fool if you like but it gives a lot of pleasure knowing this.

If it was just for decor they would go to ikea or Argos.

Hi Wendy,

I totally agree with you. An unmade bed, or even a crack in the floor, is not my idea of art. I would like to think that people bought my pictures, because they enjoyed looking at them, not because they were "expensive"! (Mine aren't of course).

Take care

Kathy

Hi All ,
This is where I think that having your artwork as a print or on a mug or T-shirt makes a hash of art, this is why some artist go for installations because they can't be copied so readily. I myself don't agree with having prints of my work, as I don't feel that it helps the artists, but to have it published like a poem in book form is a better idea that way it dose not make the artists work look cheap. I refuse to make art for the Ikea's and Argos'es of the world. I paint for my own enhancement not there's. these people would find it hard selling a print of a blank white canvas or a plain black or any other colored canvas, but within a gallery they will bring mega bucks. Why you may well ask? the answer is because it can only be seen in THERE GALLERY. My grand father always said that the working man is his own worst enemy, his greed starves the rest of his fellow workers. And I have found that it is true. When you can buy any print you want for a few quid, tomorrow you can dump it in the nearest skip and you have lost nothing, but if you buy a painting that you have paid more than a few quid for the chances are that you will keep it or try to sell it, so there's the difference.

I am not getting involved in this discussion again! We ve thrashed it out pretty much when we had a long run on abstracts vs realism and it seems pointless to continue as there are all sorts of people out there who go for different things. Those with deeper pockets like Abramoviches and Beckhams go for stuff that is out of our reach, so just find your place in the food chain and keep at it.
Good luck everybody.
