At a recent exhibition where I was exhibiting, I overheard the following comment - ' I like that one best'. She pointed. Her friend asked why. 'Well, it's real. Just like a photograph'.

Resignedly I sign off
Jack

At an exhibition some years ago I heard one woman say to her friend as they were standing in front of a Francis Bacon painting,(and I swear I'm not making this up), "Poor man I wonder what happened to his face?"

Beware artistic snobbery !! I don't favour photo realism, but I accept that many people do, so each to their own. We could so easily go down the Tracy Emin route with this one, I hope we don't.

Thats prob a fair comment about Bacon, his paintings give me the willys, normaly I love scarey stuff but his paintings seem really twisted. Brrrrr.

I think most art viewers who are non artitistic normal everyday types, just mean they like realistic and natural looking paintings, as aposed to abstract, styalised or impressionist ect, rather than being to aware of the difference of Photoreal.

You lot are hard to please aint ya

Hey I only put this on cos I thought it was funny. Let's not get too serious. Some time ago I put up a photo of me dipping my brush into a glass of white wine. Some people took that seriously as well. Oh heck. Most likely thought it improved the gloss or something. It did improve it for me, cos everything got a bit blurred. Saves squinting.
Lol

Hi everyone
On a similar vein - I was exhibiting at a fair before last Xmas, and 2 old blokes looked at my Chrysanthemum (the one displayed next to my name). One bloke walked off and the other said to me:
"my mate says that looks nothing like a chrysanthemum."

My reply?
"That's why I'm the artist and he's not."

C'est la vie!

yes - like you Jack I just saw it as humour - we have to laugh at ourselves ( and others) else it'd be a boring world. :) you get some strange"compliments" about your work but to take ourselves too seriously can cause problems. Life is for living and enjoying not arguing- its too short.

No artistic snobberry implied. Like the original post I thought it was funny. Let's have more "overheard in gallery" postings!
Here's one:
I was in the Walker Art Gallery in LIverpool doing a workshop for the public on the work of Joseph Wright of Derby. One woman who sighed up for the workshop took a look around the walls at all the Joseph Wright paintings and asked me" Did you do all these then, Love?"
And no, it isn't meant to be art snobbery, it's just funny!

I like indulging in a bit of artistic snobbery now again to make myself feel better

Last weekend , a very nice lady enquired about one of my display pieces on behalf of her daughter: "How much is that lovely ashtray?"
I wonder why...

a friend of mine used to go to a weekly life drawing class. One of the ladies there would set up her easel facing the model and then paint.... flowers???
one week my friend asked her why she did this." i don't like painting nudes" was her answer  why go to a life class i wonder? it wasn't a cheap one either...
