If I were selling paintings I might accept the idea of selling giclee prints of work via the Artists Web, but as a printmaker and photographer I'd like to be sure there was a clear differentiation (which was obvious to all visitors to the site) between these and limited edition original prints in their original medium! This is a difficulty I find with art buyers who are not conversent with printmaking as an art form in its own right.
In short the idea worries me. I'd prefer to be paet of a site that ONLY sells original art. There are too many others out there that mussy the waters.

I agree that artwork should only be sold as an original in principal, but if it wasn't for prints the majority of people would not be able to enjoy beautiful artwork in their homes.
I think that people on our website should be careful, though, and perhaps limit numbers of copies.
Personally, I would never have a print made of my mosaics because the beauty of texture and touch is lost, and I enjoy knowing that every mosaic I sell has no duplicate. I do, of course, take photographs of each mosaic for my records, portfolio and obviously for my websites.
I do miss them when they go, though! They take so long to create they are almost like part of the family when they are finished!

I think it's a difficult one to call. My whole career is based on using the same print multiple times in exhibiton and commercial use. As a fabric designer I will probably sell many of my fabric designs on paper or fabric and although none are ever identical, the image remains the same. Would you say I am muddying the water for other artists? I do agree with paintings being made into prints becoming a problem but then often prints are easier to sell.
Hmmm. Interesting thoughts though, perhaps it is just like marmite? xx
